We introduced a Healthy Snacks Menu, which was shared with parents and students to promote nutritious eating and reduce junk food consumption. This initiative educated students and brought awareness about food choices, and helped them appreciate the importance of healthy habits. A typical day in the life of a kindergartner at Akshaya Vidyalaya

A typical day in the life of a kindergartner at Akshaya Vidyalaya is calm, purposeful, and joyfully engaging. As a three- or four-year-old enters the building, she independently places her shoes and lunch bag neatly on their respective racks and is warmly greeted by the adults in the environment (classroom). Without waiting for instructions, she follows her inner drive to choose an activity: unrolling a mat, selecting a material from one of four areas—Exercises of Practical Life (EPL), Sensorial, Language, or Arithmetic—and beginning her work. Children often start with EPL activities such as pouring, spooning, puzzles, buttoning, or food preparation, gradually gravitating toward newly introduced sensorial, language, or arithmetic materials. Each activity typically lasts three to five minutes, after which the child carefully restores the material and selects another. Children also play in the park outside for half an hour twice a week. By mid-morning, children typically complete 10–12 activities before enjoying a healthy snack together, proudly sharing what they have brought, and then independently clean up before resuming work. The uninterrupted three-hour morning work cycle allows children to immerse themselves deeply in learning. They follow two simple rules: choose only available materials and those already presented by an adult. Each child receives a personalized daily presentation to explore a new material, and this is tailored to their individual interests and needs. Some introductory language activities are offered in small, spontaneous groups. After the work cycle, children eat lunch with the adults, learning responsibility by cleaning spills using child-sized tools. The afternoon is gentler—some children nap, while others sing songs in multiple languages or explore art activities such as painting, coloring, or paper folding. A few children continue to work with materials as well. Throughout the day, children remain active, focused, and happy, and before they realize it, it is time to say goodbye and head home—having spent the day learning with independence, confidence, and joy.
